Hammer toe, claw toe and mallet toe are names given to common lesser toe deformities. Although structurally they are different, all deformities involve some form of muscle/tendon imbalance as a cause. The deformities may be flexible or rigid, and may be the cause of callous or corn development, and subsequent pain from footwear irritation. Often lesser toe deformities coexist with other foot deformities, such as bunions.
