Lesser toes (toes two to five) are usually made up of three toe bones (called phalanges). The three phalanges (known as distal, middle and proximal phalanx) make up the interphalangeal joints (IPJs) of the toe. The metatarsophalangeal joint (or MTPJ) is the joint between the proximal phalanx of the toe and its corresponding metatarsal bone.
Deformities of the lesser toes are one of the most common problems encountered in podiatric practice. They are complex deformities that may involve the osseous components of the MTPJ and IPJs, as well as soft tissue structures, such as joint capsules, ligamentous structures and tendons.
